British and Ukrainian researchers will discuss the place of Ukrainian literature in Western Slavic studies.
The Foundation of the President of Ukraine for the Support of Education, Science and Sports is initiating an online meeting that will bring together British and Ukrainian researchers to find strategic solutions for the development and popularization of Ukrainian studies in the field of literature in Western academia. At the meeting, scholars will discuss the following issues:
how Ukrainian literature is studied in Western academic institutions,
why Ukrainian literature often remains in the shadow of Russian studies
and
what Ukrainian academic institutions can do to change this situation.
The event will be attended by:
William Blacker — researcher, one of the leading British literary translators of the Ukrainian language, associate professor of Ukrainian and East European culture at University College London (UCL), member of the jury of the 2023 Booker Prize.
Iryna Odrekhivska is an associate professor at the Department of Translation Studies and Contrastive Linguistics and head of the Center for English-Language Academic and Cross-Cultural Communication at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, a senior research fellow at University College London (UCL).
Sasha Dovzhyk is a researcher, curator of special projects at the Ukrainian Institute of London, and a lecturer in Ukrainian literature at the School of Slavic and East European Studies at University College London (2022/2023).
Ukrainian students, representatives of educational institutions, the media, as well as anyone interested in Ukrainian literature and its promotion in Western academia will be able to join the online meeting.
