Cambridge Professor Arieh Iserles Concludes Academic Visit to Carpathian University
A 12-day academic visit under the UK–UA Visiting Professors Programme organised by the Fund of the President of Ukraine for Education, Science, and Sports featured a public lecture, a 12-hour advanced course for master’s and PhD students, an international workshop on numerical analysis, and meetings with scientific journal editors.
The academic visit of Professor Arieh Iserles, Emeritus Professor of the University of Cambridge and one of the world’s leading experts in numerical analysis of differential equations, has concluded at Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University.
The programme provided students, doctoral researchers, lecturers, and scientists with a unique opportunity to engage directly with a globally recognized mathematician. During his stay, Professor Iserles delivered an intensive course on numerical analysis, approximation theory, and mathematical modelling. His public lecture, “Orthogonal Polynomials. Chapter 1: The Basics,” brought together students and researchers from across STEM disciplines. He also participated in a three-day international workshop alongside scholars from Spain, France, Poland, and the United Kingdom to discuss current developments in computational mathematics.
The topics covered during the visit have broad applications in mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering, and modern computational systems. Orthogonal polynomials, numerical methods, and approximation techniques form the foundation of modelling complex processes, analysing high-frequency oscillations, designing computational algorithms, and addressing problems relevant to quantum mechanics and artificial intelligence.
Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University became one of ten Ukrainian universities selected in the first cohort of the UK–UA Visiting Professors Programme. The university invited Professor Iserles to strengthen mathematical education, research culture, and international academic cooperation in the field of numerical analysis of differential equations.
The programme concluded with a meeting between Professor Iserles and representatives of academic journal editorial boards. Participants discussed the development of scholarly publishing, editorial practices, international visibility of journals, and standards of peer review. Strong academic journals are an essential part of research culture and help ensure that Ukrainian scholars remain visible within the global academic community.
The UK–UA Visiting Professors Programme was established by the Fund of the President of Ukraine for Education, Science, and Sports to enable Ukrainian universities to host professors from leading UK universities for teaching, academic events, and collaborative research in Ukraine. The programme supports the development of STEM education, research excellence, international academic partnerships, and talent retention within Ukraine’s higher education system.
In the context of the ongoing war, such initiatives carry additional significance. Ukrainian education and science require sustainable partnerships that operate within the country itself. Visits by professors from leading British universities provide Ukrainian students and researchers with direct access to cutting-edge knowledge while remaining connected to their home institutions.
The UK–UA Visiting Professors Programme is implemented by the Fund of the President of Ukraine for Education, Science, and Sports in partnership with the UK–Ukraine Academic Diaspora Network, Ukrgasbank (UGB), and the “MHP-Hromadi” Charitable Foundation.
